Project Brief

Spiral House:

With ever expanding cities and diminishing resources, sustainable housing is of crucial importance.  As a means of maximizing energy efficiency and providing a sense of community, shared space has become the focus of this project. Here, the twisting ramp becomes the physical embodiment of the social and cultural exchange evident in Toronto city life. Furthermore, the twisting geometries provide the maximum surface area require for active solar technologies such as PVC panels. Careful consideration of interior space and program with regards to passive solar techniques and environmentally friendly friendly materials, shape the building’s exterior. Given the small urban lot, stacked massing strategies maximize green space for the residents. The step back and rotation of units mends the building to its site terrain and allows in natural daylight and street views. South facing windows provide maximum amount of sunlight, as well as scenic views of Toronto’s skyline. This overall housing strategy helps foster an environmentally friendly community with an opportunity for a green lifestyle.
